National Land Afforestation Drive
Forests are the home of plant ecosystem and water that are essential to the existence of each and every living thing. They provide our lives with unlimited blessings and benefits. These include enrichment of water resources, conservation of national land, prevention of global warming, provision of services for health and recreation, and production of timber.
Recently, in addition to above services, the people of Japan want to solve global issues such as accomplishment of SDGs and realization of carbon neutrality. Therefore, there are an increasing number of expectations for various roles of forests.
With the afforestation drive, we promote tree planting and greening activities in forest lands, which could be considered as common properties of mankind, in the form of wide-ranging civic initiatives all over the country and across the borders. Thereby, we contribute to the realization of lifestyles rich in spirit, cultural progress for the country of Japan, and conservation of the global environment.
National Land Afforestation Promotion Organization
The National Land Afforestation Promotion Organization (NALAPO) was originally established as the National Greening Promotion Committee in January 1950 and served as the core organization to boost the national afforestation drive in the form of civic initiatives, with diversified participation from all spheres and levels of the Japanese society. In September 1967, the committee was incorporated. In March 1988, it set up the Funds for Forests and Water and was renamed to NALAPO. In July 2011, the organization undertook a fresh beginning with new status as a Public Service Corporation under the new public service organization system.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President of the House of Councilors serve respectively as the President and the Supreme Advisor of the organization. The Representative Director is Dr. Junichi Hamada, former President of the University of Tokyo, and NALAPO is composed of 82 regular member organizations with voting rights at the General Assembly, and further 47 supporting member organizations as of March 2024. Among the regular members are 47 Prefectural Greening Promotion Committees, which promote afforestation in respective prefectures.

Article 3 Objectives: This corporation aims, with the national afforestation drive, to establish forest resources, to conserve national land, to cultivate water resources and to plant trees in living environments. Thereby, it intends to enrich the lifestyles of Japanese citizens, to advance the Japanese culture and to conserve the global environment for its international contributions.
